Being part of the Eastern Suburbs region, Kingsford is located 7 kilometres south-east of the Sydney CBD, in the local government area of the City of Randwick. It is mainly a residential area with a large percentage of students living in medium and high-density housing. As it has a large roundabout which connects destinations it is commonly referred to as "nine-ways". The suburb was once known as South Kensington and later named Kingsford after Australian aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith.
