North Turramurra has its origins from the aboriginal word that translates to either "big hill," "high place," or "small watercourse." In the early days, this Australian suburb was commonly referred to as the Eastern Road until the railway station in 1890 was built and the place acquired a different name. Today, North Turramurra is geographically recognised as part of Sydney's Upper North Shore in New South Wales. It also belongs to the local government area of Ku-ring-gai Council at the same time. To avoid confusion, this suburb is different from similarly sounding Turramurra and South Turramurra. Arrival to this place takes a 20 km ride northwest from the Central Business District of Sydney.
